Camp Cameron was a short-lived U.S. Army camp in what was then Arizona Territory. It was set up in Madera Canyon and used by soldiers between 1866 and 1867.
Why Was Camp Cameron Built?
This camp was created because of a big problem at another nearby army post called Camp Mason. Many soldiers at Camp Mason got very sick with malaria. Malaria is a serious illness spread by mosquito bites. To keep the soldiers safe and healthy, the army decided to move them.
Where Was Camp Cameron Located?
Camp Cameron was built at the bottom of the Santa Rita Mountains. It was about 16 miles (26 kilometers) northeast of the old Camp Mason. The new location in Madera Canyon was chosen to be a healthier spot for the troops.
How Long Did Camp Cameron Last?
Camp Cameron was only a temporary home for the soldiers. It opened on October 1, 1866. The camp was then closed down on March 7, 1867. This means it was active for just over five months.
