Camp George West Historic District is also known as Camp George West. It was once a military base for the Colorado National Guard. You can find it at 15000 S. Golden Rd., in Golden, Colorado.

This camp was mainly used as a place for soldiers to practice shooting rifles. They also practiced with artillery (big guns) on Green Mountain nearby.

Today, Camp George West is used for different purposes. It is a prison, a training center for police, and a place for emergency operations.

A Look at Camp George West's Past

Camp George West started in 1903. It was built to help train soldiers from the Colorado National Guard. This group of soldiers helps protect the state and its people.

The camp was very important for military training. Soldiers learned how to use rifles and other equipment. They practiced shooting at targets on the rifle range. Artillery practice happened on Green Mountain, which is close to the camp.

Sometimes, old military training sites can have forgotten items. Experts have been checking the area since 2012. They look for any old training explosives to make sure the area is safe.

Buildings at the Camp

Camp George West has some interesting old buildings. One is called an Ammunition Igloo. This was a strong, bunker-like building used to store weapons safely.

There is also the Colorado Amphitheater. This was likely a place for gatherings or ceremonies. Both the Ammunition Igloo and the Amphitheater are now empty.

A Place in History

Camp George West is important for its history. Because of its past, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. This list includes places that are important to the history of the United States.

The Ammunition Igloo and the Colorado Amphitheater are also listed separately. This shows how special these buildings are. They help us remember the camp's military past.
