A map showing Camp Izard from 1836

Camp Izard, also known as Camp Izzard, was a military camp built by the U.S. Army in Florida. It was located along the Withlacoochee River. This camp was used during the Seminole Wars, which were a series of conflicts between the U.S. Army and the Seminole Native Americans. Camp Izard was about 20 miles southwest of a city called Ocala. It also had a cemetery, which is a place where soldiers were buried. Today, the site of Camp Izard is part of the Florida Seminole Wars Heritage Trail, a special path that helps people learn about these historical events. The camp was named after Lieutenant James F. Izard, a U.S. soldier who died in a fight with the Seminoles in that area in February 1836.

What Was Camp Izard?

Camp Izard was a temporary fort or camp. It was set up by the U.S. Army to help them during the Seminole Wars. Soldiers stayed there to protect themselves and plan their movements. The camp's location near the Withlacoochee River was important for travel and supplies.

Why Was It Built?

The U.S. Army built camps like Izard for several reasons:

  • To create a safe place for soldiers to rest.
  • To store supplies like food and weapons.
  • To serve as a base for military operations.
  • To help control the area during the Seminole Wars.

The Seminole Wars

The Seminole Wars were three long conflicts in Florida. They happened between the early 1800s and the mid-1800s. These wars were mainly about land. The U.S. government wanted the Seminole people to move from their lands in Florida. The Seminoles fought hard to stay in their homes. Camp Izard played a small but important role in these struggles.

Lieutenant James F. Izard

The camp was named to honor Lieutenant James F. Izard. He was a brave soldier who served in the U.S. Army. In February 1836, Lieutenant Izard was involved in a battle with Seminole warriors near the future site of the camp. Sadly, he was killed during this fight. Naming the camp after him was a way to remember his sacrifice.

Camp Izard Today

Even though Camp Izard was a military site, it has a different history now.

  • In 1897, many years after the wars, people reportedly held an annual picnic in the Camp Izard area. This shows how the site changed from a place of conflict to a community gathering spot.
  • Today, there is a place called the Camp Izzard Boat Ramp. This ramp helps people launch boats onto the Withlacoochee River. It keeps the name of the old camp alive.
  • The site is also part of the Florida Seminole Wars Heritage Trail. This trail helps people learn about the history of the Seminole Wars and the places where important events happened.
