History of Camp Sherman

Building the Camp
Between June and September 1917, the United States Army built over 1,300 buildings at Camp Sherman. More than 40,000 soldiers trained here during World War I. One group that trained here was the 95th Division. It was led by Brigadier General Mathew C. Smith.
Building the camp affected ancient mounds nearby. These mounds were built long ago by the native Hopewell people. Some of these old earthworks were damaged.
The 1918 Flu
In 1918, many soldiers at Camp Sherman got sick from a very bad flu. Over 5,500 soldiers were affected. Sadly, more than 1,700 soldiers died from this illness.
