Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Campania Island is a cool island located off the coast of British Columbia, a province in Canada. You can find it south of a city called Prince Rupert. It's also east of the Haida Gwaii islands, across a body of water known as Hecate Strait.

Campania Island is about 29 kilometres (18 mi) long. Its width changes, but it's usually between 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) and 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) wide. The total area of the island is around 127 square kilometres (49 sq mi).

How Campania Island Got Its Name

This island got its name way back in 1792. A Spanish explorer named Jacinto Caamaño was exploring this area. He was sailing on his ship, which was a type of small warship called a corvette, named Aranzazu.

Caamaño originally named the island Compañia. Later, when George Vancouver made maps of the region, he used that same spelling. Over many years, the spelling slowly changed to what we know today as Campania.

Island Features

The highest point on Campania Island is a mountain called Mount Pender. This mountain stands tall at about 740 metres (2,430 ft) above sea level.
