Campsis, often called trumpet creeper or trumpet vine, is a type of flowering plant. These plants are known for their beautiful, trumpet-shaped flowers. They grow as strong climbing vines. You can find them naturally in woodlands in China and North America.
There are two main species of Campsis. Both are strong perennial climbers. This means they live for many years. They lose their leaves in winter, which makes them deciduous plants. They cling to surfaces using special aerial roots. In summer, they produce large, bright, trumpet-shaped flowers. These plants are quite tough and grow well with support, like a wall. They prefer sunny spots.
Kinds of Trumpet Vines
There are two main types, or species, of Campsis plants:
- Campsis grandiflora: This is the Chinese trumpet vine. It comes from East Asia.
- Campsis radicans: This is the American trumpet vine. It grows naturally in the Southeastern United States.
Hybrid Trumpet Vines
Sometimes, different species of plants can be crossed to create a new type. This new type is called a hybrid.
- Campsis × tagliabuana: This hybrid is known as 'Madame Galen'. It was created in the mid-1800s. It is a mix between the Chinese trumpet vine (Campsis grandiflora) and the American trumpet vine (Campsis radicans).
