Campus Bay, Richmond, California facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Campus Bay is a large piece of land, about 87 acres (35 hectares), in the city of Richmond, California. It is located near Interstate 580 (California), between the San Francisco Bay, the Richmond Annex neighborhood, and Point Isabel. The area gets its name because it is close to the UC Berkeley Richmond Field Station.

A Look Back in Time

This land has a long history, going back over 100 years! For many years, different companies used the site to make chemicals. Two of the main companies were Stauffer Chemical Company and later, Zeneca, Inc.

Making chemicals stopped in 1997. After that, a big project began to clean up the land. The San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board helped to watch over this cleanup.

Cleaning Up the Land

In 2002, a company called Cherokee Simeon Venture I, LLC bought the property from Zeneca. They continued the important cleanup work.

In 2005, the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) took over watching the cleanup. The cleanup of the site is still happening today. It is a team effort, with the community, DTSC, and the property owner all working together.

Once the cleanup is finished, the land could be used for many things. This might include homes, stores, businesses, or even parks and recreation areas. Campus Bay is part of a special redevelopment area in the City of Richmond.

In 2007, cleanup work was completed in a part of the property called East Stege Marsh. In 2008, DTSC approved a report about the environmental conditions for a 26-acre (11-hectare) part of the property.
