Canóvanas is a special area, like a neighborhood, located in the municipality of Canóvanas, Puerto Rico on the island of Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 22,420 people lived here. It's known for its friendly communities and green spaces.

A Look Back at Canóvanas

Puerto Rico became part of the United States after the Spanish–American War in 1898. This happened because of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. After this, Puerto Rico became an "unincorporated territory" of the U.S. This means it's a place controlled by the U.S. government but isn't a state.

In 1899, the U.S. government counted everyone living in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census showed that 1,942 people lived in the Canóvanas area back then. Over the years, many more people have moved to Canóvanas.

Neighborhoods and Areas

Barrios are like big neighborhoods or districts in Puerto Rico. These barrios are then divided into even smaller local areas. These smaller areas are called sectores (which means sectors in English).

The types of sectores can be different. Some are simply called sector. Others might be called urbanización (a planned housing development), reparto (a land division), barriada (a neighborhood), or residencial (a housing project).
