A Look Back at Canóvanas
Puerto Rico became part of the United States after the Spanish–American War in 1898. This happened because of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. After this, Puerto Rico became an "unincorporated territory" of the U.S. This means it's a place controlled by the U.S. government but isn't a state.
In 1899, the U.S. government counted everyone living in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census showed that 1,942 people lived in the Canóvanas area back then. Over the years, many more people have moved to Canóvanas.
