The front of the Can Tinturé Museum

The Can Tinturé Museum is a special museum located in the town of Esplugues de Llobregat, near Barcelona, Spain. It is famous for being the first museum in the country dedicated entirely to sample tiles. These are special tiles used to show off different designs.

The museum is inside a beautiful house built in the late 1800s by an architect named Claudi Duran i Ventosa. Besides its own collection, the Can Tinturé Museum also looks after another museum at an old factory called La Rajoleta. This factory was once a key producer of industrial tiles in the Catalonia region, especially during the popular Art Nouveau art period.

The museum is part of two important groups: the Barcelona Provincial Council Local Museum Network and a system of science and technology museums in Catalonia.

The Museum's Amazing Tile Collection

The heart of the Can Tinturé Museum is its collection of over 3,000 tiles. This collection was started by a man named Salvador Miquel. The town of Esplugues bought it in 1999 to share with the public.

The tiles on display come from many different time periods. You can see everything from medieval tiles made hundreds of years ago to more modern ones made in factories. This shows how tile designs and styles have changed over time.

La Rajoleta: The Old Tile Factory

The Pujol i Bausis ceramic factory, known by its nickname La Rajoleta (which means "small tile" in the Catalan), is another site managed by the museum. It opened its doors as a museum space in 2002.

Inside La Rajoleta, there is a small exhibit that tells the story of the factory. Visitors can learn about how tiles were made there and understand why the factory was so important for the region's art and industry.
