Canada, Virginia facts for kids
Canada was the name of a small community where free African-Americans lived in the 1800s. It was located near the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, a city in Virginia. Many people from Canada worked at the university. This community existed from the early 1800s until the early 1900s. Eventually, the land became very valuable and was bought by people who wanted to make money from it.
Experts believe the community was named "Canada" to honor the country of Canada. In Canada, slavery was made illegal in 1833. This was a big deal because it meant people could not be forced to work without pay there.
Where Was Canada Located?
The Canada community was found between what are now Jefferson Park Avenue and Venable Lane. It was rediscovered in May 1993. This happened when workers were expanding a parking lot for the university.
What Was Found?
When the community was rediscovered, an architectural company helped study the area. They believe they found a cemetery that belonged to the Canada community. So far, 32 graves have been found there. The place where one community member's home used to be is now being turned into a public park. This park will be about 1 acre (4,047 square meters) in size.
