The Canal Warehouse: A Look Back
The Canal Warehouse was built in 1830. It stands three stories tall and is made of brick. You can find it in downtown Chillicothe, Ohio.
What is a Warehouse?
A warehouse is a large building. It is used for storing goods. These goods might be raw materials or finished products. They are kept safe until they are ready to be moved or sold.
How the Warehouse Was Built
The Canal Warehouse has a special roof design. It has a pointed shape called a gable. There are also large windows sticking out from the roof. These are called dormers.
Smart Design for Moving Goods
These dormers were not just for looks. They had a very important job. Their windows lined up with doors on the first floor. This made it easy for workers to move heavy items. They could load or unload goods from the third floor.
Entering the Warehouse
On the ground floor, there are two main entrances. Each doorway is set back a bit from the wall. You can reach them by climbing three stone steps from the sidewalk.
A Bit of History
The Canal Warehouse was built right next to the Ohio and Erie Canal. This canal was like a superhighway for boats. It helped transport goods all across Ohio.
From Canal Hub to Clubhouse
After a while, the canal was no longer used for shipping. So, the warehouse changed its purpose. It became a clubhouse for the local Veterans of Foreign Wars. This group helps military veterans.
Why is the Warehouse Important?
Today, the Canal Warehouse is special. It is one of the best examples of buildings from the canal era. Not many warehouses from the Ohio and Erie Canal are still in such good shape.
A Historic Landmark
Because of its history, the Canal Warehouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. This is a list of important places in the United States. It helps protect them.
Part of a Bigger Picture
The warehouse is also inside the Chillicothe Business District. This whole area is a historic district. It was added to the National Register in 1979.
