Canals is a town in Spain. It is a municipality located in the Valencian Community. Canals is part of the comarca called Costera. In 2007, about 13,771 people lived there.

Canals shares its borders with several other towns. These include l'Alcúdia de Crespins, Cerdà, la Granja de la Costera, Xàtiva, Llanera de Ranes, Montesa, Torrella, and Vallés. It also borders Aielo de Malferit and l'Olleria.

Geography

Canals is located in the beautiful valley of Montesa. It sits between the Grossa mountains and an area called la Costera. The highest points are in the Serra Grossa mountains. Here you can find peaks like l'Atalaia (556 meters) and la Creu (520 meters).

The Cànyoles River flows through the town from west to northeast. The Sants River starts near Canals. It then splits into two channels, or séquies. These channels bring water to the fields of Canals and to the nearby city of Xàtiva.

The main village of Canals is on the left side of the Cànyoles river. Canals and l'Alcúdia de Crespins are very close and form one connected area. If you want to visit Canals from València, you can take the A-7 highway.

History

People have lived in Canals for a very long time. We know that the Romans were here because some signs of their civilization have been found. Later, during the time of Muslim rule, Canals was an important farming village, or "alqueria," connected to Xàtiva.

In 1244, after the Christian reconquest, King James I of Aragon gave the tower and small village of Canals to Denis of Hungary. This created a new area called the Señorío de Torre de Canals. Later, in 1353, Canals was sold to Xàtiva and became a barony.

In 1522, during a time of conflict called the Revolt of the Brotherhoods, Canals was used as a base to attack Xàtiva. Many people were brought as prisoners from Xàtiva to Canals. In 1639, King Phillip IV made Canals an independent village.

During the 1800s, Canals grew a lot with new industries. There were glass factories, a paper factory, metal workshops, and places that made flour and sold cloth. This industrial growth continued into the 1900s. More factories opened, making things like oil, furniture, building materials, leather, and clothes.

Population Growth

Canals has seen its population grow over the years. In 1900, there were about 4,695 people living here. By 2007, the population had grown to 13,771. This shows that more and more people have chosen to live in Canals over time.

Historically, the economy of Canals was based on a few main things. People grew oranges through agriculture. There was also a strong industry known for making clothes and leather products. Some companies like Ferry's and Rodrigo Sancho S.A. were well-known for this. Marble production was also important.

However, in recent years, some of these big companies have closed down. For example, Ferry's closed in 2007, Argent in 2008, and Rodrigo Sancho S.A. in 2010.

Pottery has also been a very important craft in Canals. Because of this, the people from Canals are sometimes called "perolers," which means "potters."
