Canandaigua is a small, unofficial community located in Lenawee County in the U.S. state of Michigan. It's known as an "unincorporated community." This means it doesn't have its own separate local government or official borders.

The community is found along a road called M-156. Canandaigua is split between two areas: Medina Township to the west and Seneca Township to the east. Because it's unincorporated, Canandaigua doesn't have its own population count.

Exploring Canandaigua's Past

Canandaigua has a long history, starting even before the first American settlers arrived.

Early Beginnings

Long ago, a Potawatomi village existed right where Canandaigua is today. These Native American people lived and thrived in this area.

First Settlers and Growth

The first settlers from the United States began to arrive in the early 1830s. Canandaigua quickly became an important place. It was known as an early "milling village." This means it had mills that ground grain into flour. It was also a key center for farming in the region. The community was located between the towns of Clayton and Morenci.

The Post Office

Canandaigua had its own post office for many years. It opened in April 1837. For a while, until February 28, 1850, the post office was actually called Medina. The post office served the community until July 1911.
