The Candlemas Islands (called Islas Candelaria in Spanish) are a group of small islands. They are located in the northern part of the South Sandwich Islands. These islands are not home to any people, meaning they are uninhabited.
The Candlemas Islands are about 23 miles (37 kilometers) southeast of Visokoi Island. This group includes two main islands: Candlemas Island and Vindication Island. A narrow waterway called Nelson Channel separates these two islands. There are also many smaller rocks around them.
Discovery of the Islands
The Candlemas Islands were found on February 2, 1775. A British team led by James Cook discovered them. James Cook was a famous explorer. He named the islands "Candlemas" to remember the day they were found. February 2nd is a special day called Candlemas Day.
