The Candler Cottage is a special old house located at 447 Washington Street in Brookline, Massachusetts. It was built around 1850. This house is a rare example of a building style called Gothic Revival architecture in Brookline. Because of its history and unique style, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. This means it's officially recognized as an important historical place.

What Does Candler Cottage Look Like?

The Candler Cottage is found northwest of Brookline Village. It sits on the east side of Washington Street, close to Greenough Street. The house is set back from the main road. It has a fence around its lot, which is surrounded by bigger apartment buildings.

Architecture and Design

The cottage is a one-and-a-half-story building made of wood. It has a roof that slopes down on two sides, called a side-gable roof. The outside walls are covered with clapboard siding.

Special Features of the House

The front of the house has two parts that stick out, each with a pointed roof called a gable. These gabled sections are on either side of the main entrance. A porch with a hip roof covers the front door.

The gables have fancy wooden decorations called bargeboards. These decorations have small hanging pieces called drop pendants. You can also see decorative finials on the roof.

The porch is held up by posts with brackets. Some parts of the porch have unique screens that look like "Chippendale-style Chinese screens." It's thought that this front porch might have been added to the house later on. The back of the house also shows signs that it was rebuilt after a fire at some point.

Who Lived in Candler Cottage?

The Candler Cottage was built around 1850 for Mrs. John Candler. She moved to Brookline in 1849 with her two sons after her husband passed away.

The Candler Family

Mrs. Candler's sons grew up to become successful merchants. They worked in Boston, which was a big center for trade.

John W. Candler's Role

One of her sons, John W. Candler, became very active in politics. He served in the state legislature, which makes laws for Massachusetts. He also served several terms in the United States Congress. This means he helped make laws for the entire country.

The Candler Cottage is one of only a few houses in Brookline that show off the Gothic Revival style. This makes it a special part of the town's history.
