Discovering Brookline Village's Past
Brookline Village was one of the first places where people settled in what is now Brookline. It was first known as Muddy River. This spot was important because it had a crossing over the Muddy River. This crossing helped people travel between Boston and Cambridge.
How the Village Grew
From these early beginnings, Brookline Village became the town's first big economic center. In the 1800s, many businesses were on Boylston, Washington, and Harvard Streets. The area grew even more when Brookline Avenue was built. The arrival of the train line also helped the village grow. This train line is now used by the MBTA.
Its Old Name
Brookline Village was once called Punch Bowl Village. This name came from a place called the Punch Bowl Tavern. For a while, this area was even part of Roxbury.
Getting Around Brookline Village
Brookline Village is easy to reach using public transportation. The MBTA's Green Line D-train stops right here. You can get off at the Brookline Village station. This train takes you straight to downtown Boston.
