Candy Dulfer was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on September 19, 1969. She began her musical journey very early. At age five, she started playing the drums.

When she was six, she switched to the soprano saxophone. A year later, at seven, she moved to the alto saxophone. She also played in a local concert band called Jeugd Doet Leven. This name means "Youth Brings Life" in English.

First Performances

Candy played her first solo on stage with her father's band, De Perikels. She was only 11 when she made her first recordings for their album I Didn't Ask in 1981.

In 1982, at just 12 years old, she performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival. She was part of Rosa King's Ladies Horn section. Rosa King encouraged Candy to become a band leader. So, in 1984, when she was 14, Candy started her own band, Funky Stuff.

Her Amazing Music Career

Candy Dulfer mostly taught herself how to play music. She had some training in a concert band and a few months of music lessons. But she learned most of it on her own!

Playing with Superstars

Candy's band, Funky Stuff, performed all over the Netherlands. In 1987, they even opened for two of Madonna's concerts in Europe.

In 1988, the legendary musician Prince invited Candy to play an improvised solo during one of his shows. The next year, in 1989, Candy appeared in Prince's "Partyman" music video.

She also worked with Dave Stewart, a guitarist and producer from the band Eurythmics. They created the worldwide hit song "Lily Was Here" together. Candy was also a guest musician for Pink Floyd in 1990. She played with them at a big concert called Knebworth.

Candy was the main saxophonist on Van Morrison's album A Night in San Francisco in 1993. She also performed with Alan Parsons and his band in 1995.

Music and TV

In 2001, Candy worked with her father, Hans Dulfer, on a duet album called Dulfer Dulfer. She then joined Prince's band again in 2004 for his Musicology Live tour.

In 2007, Candy released her ninth studio album, Candy Store. This album was very popular. It reached number 2 on Billboard's Top Contemporary Jazz charts. Her songs "Candy Store" and "L.A. Citylights" even hit number 1 on the Smooth Jazz charts in the United States.

Also in 2007, Candy started her own TV show in the Netherlands called Candy Meets.... On the show, she interviewed other famous musicians. Some of her guests included Sheila E., Maceo Parker, and Van Morrison.

Saxophone and Honors

For many years, Candy played a Selmer Mark VI alto saxophone. But in 2010, she started using a Dutch Free Wind saxophone. These saxophones are made by Friso Heidinga in Amsterdam.

On August 13, 2017, Candy received a special honor. She was made an honorary citizen of Niš, a city in Serbia. This was because she often promotes the city during her tours and festival performances around the world. She first played at the Nisville Jazz Festival in 2009.

On August 26, 2022, Candy announced her new album, We Never Stop. It was released on October 28, 2022. This was her first album with Mascot Label Group. The album includes the song "Jammin' Tonight," which features the famous musician Nile Rodgers.
