Candy Lo's Music Journey
Early Days with Black & Blue (1995-1996)
Before becoming a solo artist, Candy Lo was the lead singer of an indie rock band named Black & Blue. The band released two albums. Their first album, Hope in Just One Day (1995), mostly featured songs sung in English. Their second album, Black & Blue (1996), was entirely in Cantonese. This change was made so more fans in Hong Kong could understand their music. Candy Lo wrote all the lyrics for both albums.
Starting a Solo Career with Sony Music (1998-2005)
In 1998, Candy Lo began her solo career by signing with Sony Music Hong Kong. Her first release was an EP (a mini-album) called Don't Have to be...Too Perfect. This EP included her very first big hit song, "Trash," which is still one of her most famous songs today.
Later in 1998, she released her first full album, Miao. The album's name came from her love for cats. She felt that cats listen better than people sometimes!
Her second album, Getting Closer to Candy Lo (1999), tried to reach a wider audience while still keeping her unique style. It included five songs that Candy Lo wrote herself, like "Regeneration," which was inspired by 1970s art rock music.
A few years later, in 2002, Candy Lo released Appreciating the Taste of Life. This album gave her a huge hit song called "Please Break Up." This song became incredibly popular, topping music charts and winning many awards in Hong Kong. It's still a favorite song for people to sing at karaoke! She even recorded a duet version of the song with Taiwanese singer Leehom Wang.
In May 2003, Candy Lo held her first big concert at the Hong Kong Coliseum, called True Music 1st Flight Live 2003. She performed for two nights! Around the same time, she released the album Candy's Airline, which featured another big hit, "Love Triangle." Later that year, she released Flower Talk, which had the popular song "Fall & Blossom."
Her last album with Sony Music was Evolution Theory in 2005. This album went back to her earlier, more alternative music style. It also included lyrics with Buddhist themes, similar to her previous album, Flower Talk.
New Beginnings and a Break (2007-2011)
After taking a two-year break from music (during which she acted in six films), Candy Lo released her tenth album, Process, in 2007. This was her first album with her new record company, WOW Music. She was one of the first artists in Asia to release a digital album on a USB flash drive! The album included the hit song "Love to the Limit."
In 2011, Candy Lo announced at a concert that she would be taking a break from singing. She said she would continue to work on music behind the scenes. She had mentioned before that she found the Hong Kong music industry challenging.
Returning to Music (2014-Present)
In 2014, Candy Lo returned to music! She joined a new music label called WhatsUp Music Limited. She worked with the band Fabel on a song called "Self-Love." This song became very popular, reaching the top of two major Hong Kong music charts.
She released two more songs in 2015: "Pastoral Dream" and "The Philosopher." In November 2017, she released "Tomorrow We Will Run by the Sea." This new song came out around the same time as her concert series, RE:TURN Candy Lo Concert 2017, which took place in Hong Kong.
In 2018, Candy Lo lent her voice to an alternative rock song called "Sunset Party." This was a special project with composer Vicky Fung and lyricist Chow Yiu Fai.
Acting Career
Candy Lo has also appeared in many films, often playing supporting roles in comedies. She was nominated for three awards at the 20th Hong Kong Film Awards in 2001 for her roles in the movies Time and Tide and Twelve Nights. She also received nominations for her acting in Truth or Dare : 6th Floor Rear Flat (2004) and Six Strong Guys (2005).
Personal Life
Candy Lo married Sammy So, who is the lead singer of the band Kolor, in April 2013.
