Candy Lo's Music Journey
Starting with Black & Blue (1995-1996)
Before becoming a solo artist, Candy Lo was the main singer for an indie rock band from Hong Kong called Black & Blue. The band released two albums. Their first album, Hope in Just One Day (1995), mostly featured songs sung in English.
Their second album, Black & Blue (1996), was sung entirely in Cantonese. This change was made so that more fans could understand their music. Candy Lo wrote all the lyrics for both of these albums.
Solo Career with Sony Music (1998-2005)
In 1998, Candy Lo began her solo career by signing with Sony Music Hong Kong. Her first release was an EP (a mini-album) called Don't Have to be...Too Perfect (不需要...完美得可怕). This EP included her very popular song "Trash" (垃圾), which became one of her signature tunes.
Later in 1998, Candy released her first full-length solo album, Miao. The album's name, "Miao," showed her love for cats. She said cats "listen while people sometimes don't."
Her second album, Getting Closer to Candy Lo (貼近盧巧音) (1999), tried to connect more with a wider audience. It still kept her unique style. This album featured five songs that Candy herself wrote. One of these, "Regeneration" (新陳代謝), was inspired by 1970s art rock music.
A big change came in 2002 with her album Appreciating the Taste of Life (賞味人間). This album gave Candy her first huge hit song, "Please Break Up" (好心分手). The song became number one on the music charts. It also won her many awards from Hong Kong's top radio and TV stations. A special version of the song was recorded with Taiwanese singer Leehom Wang. Even today, "Please Break Up" is one of the most requested songs in Hong Kong karaoke bars.
In May 2003, Candy Lo performed her first big concert at the Hong Kong Coliseum. She performed for two nights during her True Music 1st Flight Live 2003 concert series. Around the same time, she released the album Candy's Airline (糖果航空). This album included another big hit, "Love Triangle" (三角誌). Later that year, she released Flower Talk (花言.巧語), which had the hit song "Fall & Blossom" (落地開花).
Her final album with Sony was Evolution Theory (天演論), released in 2005. This album went back to her earlier alternative music style. Like Flower Talk, this album's lyrics included themes from Buddhist ideas.
New Music and Return (2007-Present)
After taking a break from music for two years, Candy Lo released her 10th album, Process, in June 2007. This was her first album with her new record company, WOW Music. She was the first artist in Asia to release a digital album on a USB flash drive! Process featured the popular song "Love to the Limit" (愛到不能).
In 2011, Candy announced at a concert that she would be stepping back from singing. However, she said she would continue to work on music behind the scenes. She had mentioned before that she was not happy with the music industry in Hong Kong.
But in 2014, Candy Lo made a return to music! She signed with a new label, WhatsUp Music Limited. She worked with the band Fabel on a song called "Self-Love" (自戀自在). This song reached the top of two major Hong Kong music charts. It was also nominated for an award for "Best Vocal Collaboration." She released two more songs in 2015: "Pastoral Dream" (田園驚夢) and "The Philosopher" (哲學家).
In November 2017, Candy released the song "Tomorrow We Will Run by the Sea" (明日我與你海邊跑一天). This song came out around the same time as her concert series, RE:TURN 盧巧音Candy Lo Concert 2017, which took place in December.
In November 2018, Candy Lo sang on an alternative rock song called "Sunset Party" (日落派對). This was part of a project with composer Vicky Fung and lyricist Chow Yiu Fai.
Acting Career
Candy Lo has also appeared in many films, often playing supporting roles in comedies. She received three nominations at the 20th Hong Kong Film Awards in 2001. These nominations were for her roles in Tsui Hark's Time and Tide and Twelve Nights. She was nominated for "Best Newcomer" and "Best Supporting Actress." She also received nominations for her supporting roles in Truth or Dare : 6th Floor Rear Flat in 2004 and Six Strong Guys in 2005.
Personal Life
Candy Lo married Sammy So in April 2013. Sammy is the lead singer of a band called Kolor.
