Canek Sánchez Guevara (born 1974, died 2015) was a writer, photographer, and musician from Cuba. He was also known as a dissident, meaning he disagreed with the government in power. Canek was the grandson of the famous Argentinian revolutionary, Che Guevara. Even though he grew up in a privileged part of Cuban society after the revolution, he soon felt unhappy with the government led by Fidel Castro. After his mother passed away, he moved to Mexico. There, he wrote for a magazine called Proceso, sharing his thoughts and criticisms about the Cuban government. He passed away in 2015 after heart surgery.

Canek Sánchez Guevara's Story

Canek Sánchez Guevara was born in Havana, the capital city of Cuba, on May 22, 1974. His mother was Hildita Guevara Gaesa, the oldest daughter of the revolutionary Che Guevara. His father was Alberto Sánchez Hernández, an activist from Mexico. Canek was named after Kan Ekʼ, which means Black Serpent. This was a special name for ancient Maya monarchs.

Growing Up in Cuba

Canek grew up in a large house in Miramar, a fancy part of Havana. His mother worked for the government there. He traveled to study in Italy, Spain, and Mexico. Then, he came back to Cuba in 1986.

As a teenager, Canek admired his grandfather, Che. But he also felt a lot of pressure. People expected him to act a certain way because of his famous family. As he got older, Canek became more and more unhappy with the government of Fidel Castro. He felt it was too strict and didn't allow people to express themselves freely. He even compared it to a monarchy, where one family rules everything.

Canek joined the punk music scene in Havana. He started a heavy metal band. This made the Cuban police watch him closely. Once, police raided a concert he was at, and he was arrested.

Leaving Cuba and Speaking Out

When Canek was 21, his mother was very sick in a hospital in Havana. They talked a lot about the Cuban revolution. His mother felt the government had stopped making progress. But she still hoped for a "Communist system with a human face," meaning a kinder version. Canek was more worried. He believed his grandfather, Che, would not have liked what the revolution had become. He felt that people faced much harsher political control than in his grandfather's time.

After his mother died in 1996, Canek decided to leave Cuba. He moved to Oaxaca, Mexico. There, he worked as an artist, musician, and writer.

He wrote articles for a magazine called Proceso. In his writings, he said the Cuban government was not democratic. He also felt it was not truly communist. In October 2004, he wrote that the Cuban revolution had created a powerful group of officials who were far from the people. He said it was unfair because it punished people who were different. He mentioned how it treated homosexuals, hippies, and free thinkers.

Canek believed the government was crushing people's freedom to keep power. Because of his strong opinions, some people who supported the Cuban government criticized him. Even his aunt, Aleida Guevara, disagreed with him. Canek responded by saying that supporting the Cuban government was like being overly devoted to a religion.

In 2006, he wrote, "I’m just a selfish person who aspires to be a free man, an egotist who knows that egotism is part of all of us and [...] that my freedom is only valid if yours is too." This shows he believed in personal freedom for everyone.
