The History of Canelos
How Canelos Changed Over Time
Canelos has a long and interesting history. Back in the 1860s, it was a very important place. It was even a "canton" all by itself!
Canelos as a Canton
When Canelos was a canton, it included several villages. These villages were Canelos, Sarayaku, Lliquino, and Andoas. It was also home to the Sapara and Jíbara tribes. This shows how big and important Canelos once was.
Becoming Part of a Province
Later, in 1897, a new area called the "Oriental Region" was created. This change meant that Canelos became part of the Tungurahua province. Provinces are like states or larger regions within a country.
A Parish in Pastaza
Eventually, Canelos became a parish. It is now a parish within the Pastaza canton. This canton is part of the Pastaza province. So, Canelos went from being a large canton to a smaller parish within a bigger area.
