Canovelles is a town located in the Vallès Oriental area of Catalonia, in northeastern Spain. It's part of the Barcelona province. Canovelles is only about 2 kilometers away from Granollers, a larger local city. They are so close they almost form one big urban area.

What is Canovelles Like?

Canovelles is a municipality (a type of local government area) in Spain. It's known for its friendly community and interesting history. The town has grown a lot over the years.

How Many People Live Here?

As of 2018, about 16,317 people live in Canovelles. The town is divided into different neighborhoods. Most of the newer residents live in an area called Barriada Nova (which means 'New Quarters').

People who moved to Canovelles in the 1960s and 1970s are now often moving to areas on the edge of town. It can be hard for young people to find affordable homes here. This sometimes makes them move to other towns nearby.

How Has the Population Changed Over Time?

Canovelles has seen a big increase in its population. In the 1950s, only a few hundred people lived here. By the 1970s, the population had grown to over 8,000! This was because many families moved here looking for work. The town has continued to grow steadily since then.

What is the Economy Like?

Canovelles' economy mostly relies on the service sector. This means many people work in jobs that provide services to others. For example, they might work in shops, restaurants, or offices.

A very important part of the local economy is the weekly market. It happens every Sunday and has more than 500 stalls! You can find clothes, electronics, and fresh fruit there. It's a busy and popular place.

A Look at Canovelles' History

People have lived in the area around Canovelles for a very long time. Scientists have found old tools and objects from the Neolithic Period (the New Stone Age). They have also found things from the time of the Roman Empire.

One cool discovery is a "Menhir." This is a tall, upright stone that was put in place by people long ago. A copy of this Menhir is shown at the Can Palots Theater.

The name Canovelles first appeared in a written document in the year 1008 AD. This document was about the Abbot of Sant Cugat, an important religious leader.

Recent History of Canovelles

Between the 1950s and 1970s, many families came to Canovelles. They moved from other parts of Spain, like Extremadura and Andalusia. This caused the town's population to grow by a huge amount. Since the late 1990s, many people have also moved here from places like Morocco, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Latin America.

In the 1970s, some groups in Canovelles secretly worked against the government at the time. They wanted to bring about political change.

In 2008, Canovelles celebrated a special anniversary. It marked 1,000 years since the town's name was first written down in that old document from 1008.

Around 2007, the Socialists' Party of Catalonia (PSC) became the main political party in the town's government. José Orive was the mayor. In 2008, the town government decided to increase the pay for the mayor and local council members. This decision caused some debate. People put up stickers around town to show they disagreed with the pay raise. The town government later paid a company to remove these stickers. José Orive later left his job as mayor for personal reasons. Emilio Cordero Soria became the new mayor in 2016.

Who Runs Canovelles?

The town of Canovelles is led by a Mayor and a group of Councillors. They are chosen by the people in elections. The current mayor is Emilio Cordero Soria. He has been the mayor since 2016.
