The Cap de Creus (also called Cabo de Creus in Spanish) is a special piece of land that sticks out into the sea in the very northeast of Catalonia, a region in Spain. It's about 25 kilometers south of the border with France. This area is the easternmost point of mainland Spain and the Iberian Peninsula.

The Cap de Creus is located near the town of Cadaqués. The closest big city is Figueres, which is famous as the birthplace of the artist Salvador Dalí. Today, the entire Cap de Creus area is protected as a Natural Park.

Exploring the Unique Landscape

This peninsula covers about 190 square kilometers. It's a very windy and rocky place with hardly any trees. But along its coast, you'll find tiny, beautiful coves with deep blue water, perfect for boats to anchor.

Mountains and the Tramontana Wind

The mountains here are the eastern foothills of the Pyrenees. These mountains form a natural border between Spain and France. The region often gets hit by a very strong north wind called "tramontana". This powerful wind has caused many shipwrecks over the years.

Charming Coastal Villages

  • Cadaqués: This is the most famous village in the area. It has a sophisticated feel and has been a home for many artists and writers.
  • Port Lligat: Close to Cadaqués, this small, beautiful bay was where Salvador Dalí built his unique home. Dalí even featured the Cap de Creus in some of his famous paintings, like The Persistence of Memory.
  • El Port de la Selva: This village has a small fishing harbor. It's a quieter place, known for its good food and pleasant outdoor cafes.

Sant Pere de Rodes Monastery

High up at about 500 meters, you'll find the ancient Sant Pere de Rodes monastery. From here, you can enjoy amazing views of the Cap de Creus and the Pyrenees mountains. This monastery is very old, with its first parts built around 750 AD, and much of it dating back to the 11th century.

The Legend of Hercules

There's an old legend that says the Cap de Creus was actually carved out by the mighty hero Hercules himself!
