Discovering Capdepera
Capdepera is a historic village that is only about 8 kilometers away from another town called Artà. Long ago, there was a special watchtower where the Castle of Capdepera stands today. This tower helped guard the coast from dangers.
A Look at Capdepera's Past
In the year 1300, a king named James II of Aragon gave an order. He wanted a fortified village to be built. This village would help control the empty lands nearby and protect the sea routes around Majorca.
Safe from Pirates
For many centuries, the people of Capdepera lived safely behind the strong walls of their village. These walls protected them from pirate attacks. When the danger of pirates went away, people started to move out of the walled town. They built new homes at the bottom of the 162-meter-high hill. This is how modern-day Capdepera grew.
Capdepera's Port: Cala Ratjada
The nearby town of Cala Ratjada is actually connected to Capdepera's history. It grew as Capdepera's main fishing and trading port. Even today, you can take a ferry from Cala Ratjada to the neighboring island of Menorca.
Who Lives in Capdepera Today?
