Cape Campbell is a special place in New Zealand. It is a piece of land that sticks out into the sea. In the Māori language, its name is Te Karaka. You can find it on the northeastern coast of the South Island.

Cape Campbell is part of the Marlborough District. It is about 15 kilometers (9 miles) northeast of a town called Ward. It is also about 42 kilometers (26 miles) southeast of Blenheim. This area is known for its beautiful coastline.

What is Cape Campbell?

Cape Campbell is a headland. This means it is a high point of land that reaches out into the ocean. It marks the southern end of a place called Clifford Bay.

This cape is also quite close to the salt works at Lake Grassmere. Here, salt is collected from the sea.

The Famous Lighthouse

Guiding Ships Safely

One of the most important things at Cape Campbell is its lighthouse. The Cape Campbell Lighthouse has been standing tall since 1870. It helps guide ships safely around the cape.

Lighthouses shine bright lights. These lights warn ships about dangerous rocks or shallow waters. They also help ships find their way along the coast.

Life of a Lighthouse Keeper

Long ago, people called lighthouse keepers lived at the lighthouse. Their job was to make sure the light was always shining. They lived in small homes right next to the lighthouse.

It was a very important job. Ships depended on them to stay safe, especially at night or in bad weather.

Exploring Cape Campbell

The Cape Campbell Track

Today, you can visit Cape Campbell by walking a special path. It is called the Cape Campbell Track. This is a four-day walking trip.

Walkers on the track follow an old path. This path was once used by the lighthouse keepers. They used it to bring important supplies to the lighthouse. These supplies came from a place called Flaxbourne Station Homestead. This homestead also had the very first telegraph office in the area.

A View from Space

Cape Campbell is so big, you can even see it from space! Astronauts on the International Space Station have taken pictures of it. It looks amazing from high above the Earth.
