Antarctic shags breed in this special area.

Cape Davidson is a piece of land that sticks out into the ocean. It's the most southern tip of something called Mackenzie Peninsula. This cape is also on the west side of the entrance to Wilton Bay. You can find it in the western part of Laurie Island, which is one of the South Orkney Islands in Antarctica.

A group called the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition mapped this area in 1903. Their leader, William Speirs Bruce, named it after J. Davidson. He was the first mate on their ship, the Scotia.

Why is Cape Davidson Special for Birds?

Near Cape Davidson, there's a small, rocky island. It's about 1 kilometer away from the main cape. This tiny island is only about 2.8 hectares in size. That's about the size of five football fields.

A Home for Antarctic Shags

This small island is very important for birds. BirdLife International has called it an Important Bird Area (IBA). This means it's a key spot for birds to live and raise their young.

The island is home to a large colony of Antarctic shags. These are a type of seabird. In 1983, scientists counted about 225 pairs of these birds breeding there. This shows how vital this small island is for their survival.
