Cape Higuer

Cape Higuer (also called Higer lurmuturra in Basque) is a special piece of land that sticks out into the Bay of Biscay. It's located at the end of the Jaizkibel mountain range, right near the border between France and Spain. You can find it in the town of Hondarribia, about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) from the town center.

At Cape Higuer, you'll find a lighthouse that helps guide ships. There's also a camp-site and a few inns where people can stay. Many people think Cape Higuer is the very westernmost point of the Pyrenees mountains. A famous long-distance hiking trail, called GR 11, actually starts right here!

Ancient History of Cape Higuer

Deep under the water, about 17 meters (56 feet) down, near the old San Telmo castle, people have found amazing clues from Ancient Roman times. These are called "vestiges," which means old remains.

Divers discovered a sunken ship, likely from the Roman era. It was carrying minerals and pieces of wood. They also found ancient pottery, which gives us clues about how people lived long ago. This discovery is the third Roman archaeological site found in the Lower Bidasoa area. It helps us learn more about an ancient Roman town called Oiasso, which was once home to the Basque people.
