Capetown is a small community, also called a locality, located in Humboldt County, California. It sits right on the Bear River, about 3 miles (5 km) northeast of Cape Mendocino. This interesting place is about 49 feet (15 meters) above sea level.

Capetown has had a few different names over the years. It was once known as Gas Jet and also False Cape. One of the coolest facts about Capetown is that it's the westernmost community in the entire state of California!

A Look Back at Capetown's Names

Capetown's history is tied to its changing names. The area was first called Gas Jet. This name came from natural gas that used to escape from an oil well nearby. A post office, which is where people send and receive mail, operated under the name Gas Jet from 1868 to 1876.

Later, another post office opened in 1870 with the name False Cape. But in 1879, the name was officially changed to Capetown. This post office served the community for many years before it finally closed its doors in 1937.

What's the Weather Like in Capetown?

Capetown enjoys a special kind of weather known as a warm-summer Mediterranean climate. On climate maps, this is often shortened to "Csb."

This means that Capetown has summers that are warm but not super hot, and they are also quite dry. The average temperature during the warmest month never goes above 71.6°F (22°C). Winters are generally mild and wet. It's a pleasant climate for being so close to the coast!
