The Captain Benjamin Allyn II House, also known as the Thomas Allyn House, is a very old and important house in Windsor, Connecticut. You can find it at 119 Deerfield Road.

This house was built a long time ago, possibly in the mid-1700s. It's a great example of a brick house from the Colonial era, which was before the United States became a country. Because it's so special, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. This list helps protect important historical places across the country.

About the Allyn House

The Allyn House is on the west side of Deerfield Road. This road used to be the main path along the Connecticut River in southern Windsor. The house is a great example of old American architecture.

What the House Looks Like

The house has 2-1/2 stories, meaning it has two full floors and a smaller half-floor, usually in the attic. It has a "side gable roof," which means the triangular parts of the roof are on the shorter sides of the house.

The walls are made of brick laid in a pattern called "common bond." You can see different brick shapes in places, which shows the house was built or changed over time. The front of the house has five sections with windows and a door. The windows on the first floor have rounded tops, while the second-floor windows are rectangular and sit right under the roof.

Inside, the house has a "center-hall plan." This means there's a hallway in the middle with rooms on either side. There are "parlors" (living rooms) on both sides, and a kitchen with a small extra room in the back. You can still see the original wooden details and wide pine floors from when the house was built.

How Old Is This House?

People have long believed the house was built in 1670. This idea came from a carving on one of its main wooden beams, where only the "1" and "0" are still clear.

However, it's also possible the house was built later, around 1760. Records from that time aren't clear if this exact house or another one was standing in 1670.

The house was first built in a style called a "saltbox." This means the roof sloped down very far in the back, making the back of the house only one story tall. Later, the house was changed to have a full second floor all around. You can tell this by looking at the different types of bricks used. Even if it was built in 1760, its style is older than many other brick houses in Windsor from the later "Federal period."
