Exploring the Captain Lord Mansion
The Lord Mansion stands at the corner of Pleasant and Green Streets. These are quiet streets in the main part of Kennebunkport. It's a grand, three-story house made of wood. The roof is flat and has a small tower called a cupola on top.
What the House Looks Like
The front of the house is wide with five sections. The main door is in the middle. It has windows on either side and a covered porch with a sloped roof. The first two floors have large windows with six panes of glass. Above the main door, there's a special three-part window. The third floor has smaller windows with three panes of glass. On the right side of the house, you can see unique round and oval windows.
Inside the Mansion
The inside of the house has been carefully fixed up. Most of its original Federal style wood details are still there. You can also see some old wallpaper from long ago. A really cool part is the curved staircase that stands on its own. In 1859, a three-story addition was built at the back of the house.
A Glimpse into History
Kennebunkport was a very important place for shipping and building ships. This was especially true in the early 1800s. However, during the War of 1812, British ships blocked the coast. This made it very hard for ships to come and go.
Building During Hard Times
Nathaniel Lord was a local shipbuilder. Because of the blockade, his workers couldn't build ships. So, he used them to build this amazing house instead! They also built a barn next to it in 1812.
A Family Home for Generations
The house stayed in the Lord family for many years. It was passed down through the female line of the family. This meant the house had different names over time as it went to new owners. The last Lord family member sold the house in 1972. After that, it was turned into a bed and breakfast inn. Now, visitors can experience a piece of history by staying there.
