Discovering the Charlton House
The Captain Richard Charlton House sits in the Norwichtown area of Norwich. You can find it on the northwest side of Mediterranean Lane. It is just north of East Town Street.
What Does the House Look Like?
This house is a one-and-a-half-story building. It is made of wood. The house is five bays wide, which means it has five sections across the front. It has a roof that slopes down on two sides, called a side-gable roof. There is a large chimney right in the middle of the house.
The front door is in the center of the house. It has small windows on each side. These windows have special glass that looks like old "bullseye" glass. The door also has decorative columns next to it.
Inside the Historic Home
Inside, the house has a typical layout for its time. It has a central chimney plan. When you enter, there is a small hallway. From this hallway, a narrow, winding staircase goes up to the attic.
What used to be the kitchen is now the living room. It is on the left side of the house. On the right side, there is a small bedroom and a modern kitchen. The floors are made of wide wooden boards. The walls are covered with vertical wood planks, made to look like the original ones. The door handles and hinges are a mix of old, original, and new parts made to look old. They are all made of wrought iron.
Who Was Captain Richard Charlton?
Experts believe this house was built around 1800. It likely replaced an earlier house. That first house belonged to Richard Charlton, who was a ship's captain. Captain Charlton was a well-known captain in the area. Sadly, he died while serving in the military during the French and Indian War.
This house might have been built using some of the wooden beams from Captain Charlton's first house. His son, Samuel, may have built it. The house had a big repair and update project in the 20th century. This helped keep it looking good for many more years.
