The Captain Andrew Offutt Monument is a special statue located in Ryder Cemetery in Lebanon, Kentucky. It stands as a tribute to Captain Andrew Offutt, who was a brave officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was part of the 5th Regiment Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry and even joined General William Tecumseh Sherman's famous "March to the Sea." This monument is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its importance in history.

What Does the Monument Look Like?

The monument features a beautiful marble statue of Captain Andrew Offutt. This statue stands on top of a strong granite base. Captain Offutt is shown wearing his Union officer uniform. You can see his special kepi hat and a long tunic coat. He also has a sword hanging by his side.

Right next to Captain Offutt's grave, you'll find the graves of two other veterans from the Civil War. One of these soldiers was a Confederate, meaning he fought for the Southern states. He rode with a famous Confederate general named John Hunt Morgan.

Why Was Captain Offutt Honored?

Captain Andrew Offutt was born in 1837 and lived until 1921. He served in the Civil War from 1861 to 1865. Even though he lived for 56 years after the war ended, his family chose to show him in his Union Army uniform on his monument. This suggests that his time fighting in the war was a very important part of his life. His actions during the war, especially with General Sherman, were clearly very meaningful to him and his family.

A Special Place in History

On July 17, 1997, the Captain Andrew Offutt Monument was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of places in the United States that are important to history. This monument was one of sixty different monuments in Kentucky related to the Civil War that were recognized at the same time.

It is quite rare to find monuments dedicated to Union soldiers in Kentucky. Most monuments in the state honor Confederate soldiers. The Captain Andrew Offutt Monument is one of the few that clearly shows strong support for the Union cause. In fact, besides the Union Monument in Vanceburg, it's one of the only ones to highlight a Union soldier's actions, especially mentioning his part in General William T. Sherman's march.
