The Union Monument in Vanceburg is a special statue in Vanceburg, Kentucky. It stands in Lewis County, Kentucky. This monument honors the brave soldiers who fought for the Union during the American Civil War. It's unique because it's the only monument south of the Mason–Dixon line that honors Union soldiers outside of a cemetery and was paid for by the public.

A Special Tribute to Union Soldiers
This monument was built in 1884. The people of Lewis County paid for it. Lewis County was a strong supporter of the Union during the Civil War. Even in the 1880s, many people there still felt loyal to the Union cause.
The monument stands about 34 feet tall. Both its base and the main part are made of limestone. The base is five feet high and seven feet wide. The statue on top shows a Union soldier. He is wearing winter clothes and a special hat called a kepi.
Remembering Their Sacrifice
The monument has an important message carved into it. It says:
The war for the Union was right, everlastingly right, and the war against the Union was wrong, forever wrong
In total, 107 men from Lewis County died fighting for the Union during the war. Their names are carved onto this monument. It helps everyone remember their bravery and sacrifice.
A Historic Landmark
On July 17, 1997, the Union Monument in Vanceburg became a nationally recognized landmark. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes important historical sites across the United States.
It was one of 61 monuments from the Civil War in Kentucky added at that time. Most of these monuments honored Confederate soldiers. The Vanceburg monument is special because it strongly supports the Union side. Another Union-friendly monument is the Captain Andrew Offutt Monument in Lebanon, Kentucky.
