Everhope, also known for a long time as the Captain Nathan Carpenter House, is a historic home near Eutaw, Alabama. It was finished in 1853 for Nathan Mullin Carpenter. This beautiful house is important for its design and history. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage.

History of Everhope House

Nathan Mullin Carpenter's family moved to Greene County, Alabama, in the early 1820s. Nathan was born on December 22, 1826. He served in the Mexican–American War with a group called the Eutaw Rangers.

Carpenter married Catherine Cockrell in 1848. Sadly, she passed away in 1849. He married again in 1851 to Marjorie Pippen.

Nathan and Marjorie Carpenter bought a large piece of land in 1852. The main house was built from 1852 to 1853. A local builder named David Rinehart Anthony constructed it. The Carpenter house looked very much like Marjorie's family home, Pippen Place. Nathan and Marjorie raised eight children in their new house.

In 1862, during the American Civil War, Carpenter gathered a group of men called the Confederate Rangers. They met on the lawn in front of the house.

The house was later inherited by the Carpenters' daughter, Fannie. After she passed away in 1944, her nephew, Clifford S. Boyce, inherited it. Clifford and his wife lived there until he died in 1974. The house was empty for a few years.

In 1977, the Dr. George E. Rudd family bought the house. It was added to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage that same year. The house still did not have modern plumbing or bathrooms. The Rudd family used it only for weekends and holidays. The house faced some damage during this time.

Charles and Jan Bullock bought the Carpenter house in 1994. They renamed it Twin Oaks Plantation. The Bullocks started a big project to restore the house. They also added modern comforts. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999 while they owned it.

David and Pam Harmon bought the property in 2005. The two large oak trees, which gave the house its "Twin Oaks" name, died soon after. This led the Harmons to rename the house Everhope. They continued to work on restoring and preserving this historic home.

Architecture of Everhope

Everhope is built in the Greek Revival style. It is a two-story house made of wood. The roof is gabled, covering both the front porch and the main part of the house. The foundations and chimneys are made of brick.

The front of the house has a large, two-story porch called a portico. Four tall, eight-sided columns support this porch. The portico covers the entire front of the house. In the middle of each floor, there are double doors with windows on the sides. A special balcony sticks out from the second floor.
