Carampangue is a small, friendly town in the Biobío Region of Chile. It's about 50 kilometers south of Concepción, a big city nearby. Carampangue shares its borders with the towns of Arauco and Ramadillas.

A highway runs through Carampangue, dividing it into two parts. Locals often call these parts Carampangue Viejo (meaning "Old Carampangue") and Carampangue Nuevo (meaning "New Carampangue"). This isn't an official split, but it helps people give directions easily.

What's in a Name?

The name Carampangue comes from the Mapudungun language. This is the language spoken by the Mapuche people, who are native to parts of Chile and Argentina. In Mapudungun, Carampangue means "green Nalca".

What is Nalca?

Nalca is a plant that looks a bit like a fern. It grows naturally in the area around Carampangue. People often eat Nalca, much like you might eat celery, usually with a sprinkle of salt.

Life in Carampangue

The main way people in Carampangue earn a living is through the lumber industry. This means working with wood from trees.

Local Jobs

A large company called Celulosa Arauco has operations just outside of town. This company is the biggest employer in the area. Many people in Carampangue and nearby communities work there.

How Many People Live Here?

Carampangue itself is a small town. However, when you include the nearby communities, the total population is about 6,000 people. These surrounding communities include Conumo, La Meseta, Chillancito, and Pichilo.
