History of Carbon Cliff
The village of Carbon Cliff has an interesting past. A railroad line, the Chicago and Rock Island, first reached this area in 1854. This railroad later became known as the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific.
Early Coal Mining
In the mid-1800s, Carbon Cliff became a busy place for coal mining. The village got its name from the many coal mines found on the bluff (a steep cliff) west of town. These mines were some of the first to operate on the west side of the Rock River. Companies like Stoehr & Schadt Coal Co. dug for coal for many years. However, by the early 1900s, most of the coal was gone, and mining stopped.
Becoming a Village
On November 13, 1906, people living in the Hampton area asked the county court if they could officially become a village. The citizens voted, and with 55 votes for and 28 against, Carbon Cliff officially became a village on December 8, 1906.
The Clay Industry
The bluffs of Carbon Cliff were also a great source of clay. In 1865, a company called Argillo Works started. They used the clay to make special bricks that could handle high heat (called fire brick) and drainage tiles for farms. Argillo's products were sold all over the country. It was one of the biggest businesses in Rock Island County for a long time. Sadly, a fire in the 1930s destroyed the company's buildings, and it closed down.
An old geological survey from 1882 mentioned the pottery business in Carbon Cliff. It said that after the coal mines closed, people noticed the good clay. A pottery factory was built, which looked like a big railroad building with a tall smokestack. A small village grew up around this factory, depending on it for jobs.
