Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Carcarañá River is a river in Argentina. It is also known as the Arroyo Saladillo or Río Saladillo in Spanish. This important river starts where two other rivers meet: the Río Tercero and the Saladillo River (which is the lower part of the Río Cuarto). This meeting point is in the southeast of Córdoba province, near Cruz Alta.

From there, the Carcarañá River flows eastward into the province of Santa Fe. In Santa Fe, it first turns south, then east, and finally northeast. It flows past the city of Carcarañá. The river also receives water from the Cañada de Gómez. As it flows, it creates small waterfalls and passes through deep valleys up to 20 meters (about 65 feet) high. Then, it turns north and empties into the Coronda River (also called Riacho Coronda), south of Gaboto. The Coronda River then flows into the large Paraná River about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) downstream from where the Carcarañá joins it.

The area that the Carcarañá River collects water from is called its basin. This basin covers 2 percent of Santa Fe's land. About 4 percent of Santa Fe's people live in this area. The river is about 240 kilometers (149 miles) long. Only medium-sized ships can travel on it. The Carcarañá River flows through or near many cities and towns. These include Inriville, Los Surgentes, and Cruz Alta in Córdoba. In Santa Fe, it passes Arteaga, San José de la Esquina, Los Nogales, Arequito, Los Molinos, Casilda, Carcarañá, Andino, and Gaboto. This region is one of the richest farming areas in the world. People used the river to make hydroelectricity (power from water) from the 1800s until the 1930s.

History of the Carcarañá River

The mouth of the Carcarañá River is a very important historical place. It was where the first European settlement in the Río de la Plata region was built. This area is now part of Argentina. In 1527, Sebastian Cabot, an explorer working for Spain, built a fort there called the Sancti Spiritus Fort. Years later, this spot was also a meeting place for important figures. Juan de Garay, who founded the city of Santa Fe, met an envoy from Jerónimo Luis de Cabrera, who founded Córdoba, at this very location.
