The black-chinned siskin grows to be about 13 centimeters (5 inches) long.

The male bird has a black cap on its head. It also has a black patch under its chin. The rest of its head and back are yellowish-olive with black stripes. Its lower back (rump) is bright yellow. Its wings are black with two yellow stripes. There is also a yellow patch on its main flight feathers. The male's belly is white, and its chest is greenish-yellow.

The female siskin looks a lot like the male. However, her colors are softer and less bright. She does not have the black on her head or throat. Her head and back are more of a grayish-olive color. Her underside is pale yellowish-olive, and her belly is whitish.

You might confuse this bird with the hooded siskin. But the hooded siskin does not live as far south. Also, the male hooded siskin has more black on its head. The female hooded siskin has a yellow rump.
