The Carew Cross is a very old stone cross from the 11th century. It stands in the village of Carew, Pembrokeshire, in Wales. This important monument is protected as a Grade I listed building. This means it is a very special historical site.

What is the Carew Cross?

The Carew Cross is a famous example of an 11th-century Celtic cross. These crosses are usually tall, stone monuments with a ring around the center. Many were used as memorials. People believe this cross remembers Maredudd ab Edwin, who died in 1035. Maredudd was the brother of Hywel ab Edwin. Both brothers were important rulers of a Welsh kingdom called Deheubarth. The cross was likely made around the time Maredudd passed away.

Where Did the Cross Stand?

The cross has been in Carew since at least 1690. Before that, its exact location is a mystery. Some think it was moved to Carew to decorate the nearby Carew Castle. The cross already had some damage, like parts of the stone flaking off, before 1690.

Over the years, the cross has been moved a few times:

  • In 1811, it stood on a low base.
  • About 15 years later, this base was changed to match a new, lower road.
  • In 1844, the top part of the cross came loose. It was then put back together using lead.
  • The cross was moved away from the road in 1925.
  • During the Second World War, it was moved to Carew Castle for safety.
  • After the war, it was placed back by the roadside, but in a new spot.

Why is the Carew Cross Important?

The Carew Cross became a Grade I listed monument on May 14, 1970. It was given this high protection because it is a unique Welsh cross. It is considered one of the best early Christian monuments in all of Wales. The cross even inspired the symbol for Cadw, which is the Welsh government's historic environment service.

What Does the Cross Look Like?

The Carew Cross is similar in design to another famous cross found in Nevern. It has special carvings and patterns. On its west side, there is an inscription that reads "MARGIT EUT REX ETG [uin] FILIUS." The rest of the cross is covered in detailed, abstract designs.

The cross stands about 4 metres (13 ft) tall. It is made of two separate stone pieces. These pieces are joined together using a special connection called a tenon joint. The top part of the cross is made from Carmarthenshire sandstone. The lower part is made from an igneous-type stone, which comes from the Preseli Hills.
