The assiniboia sedge (scientific name: Carex assiniboinensis) is a type of sedge plant. It belongs to a group of sedges called Hymenochlaenae. This plant was first officially described in 1884 by an American botanist named William Boott.
You can find the assiniboia sedge growing in parts of Canada and the United States. It likes to live in floodplain forests, which are woodlands near rivers that sometimes flood. It also grows in old river channels, along riverbanks (called riparian woodlands), and in areas with many shrubs.
Discovering the Assiniboia Sedge
This unique sedge was first identified and named in 1884. This was an important step in understanding the different types of plants in North America. William Boott was the scientist who gave it its official name.
What Does the Assiniboia Sedge Look Like?
The assiniboia sedge has stems, called culms, that grow in bunches and tend to droop. These stems can reach a height of about 3 to 7 centimeters (which is about 1 to 3 inches). Its leaves are quite narrow, usually measuring between 1 and 2.3 millimeters wide.
