Carex interior is a type of plant known as a sedge. Its common name is the inland sedge. This plant grows naturally across a large part of North America. You can find it from Alaska down to northern Mexico. It also grows in the mid-Atlantic United States.
About the Inland Sedge
The inland sedge is a plant that loves wet places. It often grows in soils that have a lot of limestone in them. These soils are called calcareous soils.
What the Inland Sedge Looks Like
This sedge grows in clumps. Its stems can reach almost a meter (about 3 feet) tall. Each stem usually has a few leaves.
Its Flowers and Fruits
The plant produces groups of flowers called an inflorescence. These flowers look like open, star-shaped spikes. They are covered with shiny gold scales. After the flowers, the plant makes fruit. Each fruit is covered in a special casing called a perigynium. This casing has a toothed edge and a red tip.
