Carey is a small, unincorporated community located in Childress County, Texas, in the United States. An unincorporated community is a place that doesn't have its own official local government like a city or town. In the year 2000, about 60 people lived in Carey.

The Story of Carey, Texas

Carey was first known by a different name: Talulah. It was named after a person called Talulah Collier. A post office was opened in the community in 1896.

How Carey Got Its Name

Just two years later, in 1898, the Fort Worth and Denver City Railway decided to change the town's name. They renamed it Carey, honoring a railroad foreman named Dan Carey. He was given land in the area, which helped the community grow.

Life in Early Carey

By 1940, Carey was a busy little place. It had a machine called a cotton gin that separated cotton fibers from their seeds. There was also a general store where people could buy supplies, and three churches. The post office was still there too. At that time, about 25 families lived in Carey.

Population Over Time

The number of people living in Carey changed a bit over the years. In 1980, there were 57 residents, and the community still had its post office and a store. From 1990 through 2000, the population increased slightly to 60 people.

A Tornado in Carey

On March 23, 1973, a type of storm called an F1 tornado hit Carey. It caused some damage to the area.

Carey is found in Childress County, Texas. It sits right on U.S. Route 287, which is a major road. It's about 8 miles (13 kilometers) northwest of the town of Childress. You can also find Carey on Texas State Highway Loop 328.

Early Schools

In 1888, Talulah Collier, who the community was first named after, became the very first schoolteacher in the area. The school building was still standing in 1940.

Joining a Larger School District

Later, in the 1960s, the school in Carey joined the Childress Independent School District. This meant it became part of a larger school system that serves the Childress area.
