Childress is a city in Texas, United States. It is the main city and the county seat of Childress County. The city was started in 1887 and officially became a city in 1890. In 2020, about 5,737 people lived there.

The city and county are named after George Campbell Childress. He was a very important person from Nashville, Tennessee. George Campbell Childress was the main writer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. This important document helped Texas become independent. The county and city were named in his honor many years after he passed away.

Childress was founded in 1887. It quickly grew and was officially made a city in 1890. Over the years, it has been an important place in the region.

Childress is surrounded by several other counties and even another state. To its west is Hall County. To the southeast, you'll find Hardeman County. To the northeast, it borders Harmon County, Oklahoma in Oklahoma. Collingsworth County is to the north, and Cottle County is to the south.

Fun and Activities in Childress

Childress has places for fun and sports. The Fair Park Auditorium is right at the entrance to the city park. Near it, you'll find the stadium where the Childress High School football team plays.

Education in Childress

Students in Childress attend schools run by the Childress Independent School District.
