How Carey Bay Got Its Name

Carey Bay was named after a person called William Cary. He was involved with a company named the Excelsior Land Investment and Building Company and Bank Limited. This company played a big part in developing the land in the Toronto area.

The Excelsior Land Company

The Excelsior Land Company was one of the first companies to develop land in the Toronto district. They started selling plots of land in 1887. William Cary was an important director of this company for 12 years, starting in 1880. Because of his work, the area was named in his honor.

The name of the area has changed its spelling over time.

  • Originally, it was called "Cary Bay" and described just a part of the coastline.
  • On August 31, 1973, the spelling "Cary Bay" was officially recorded.
  • However, as the area grew, it became a suburb.
  • On May 31, 1991, the name was officially changed and recorded as "Carey Bay." This is the spelling we use today.
  • In 2001, the Lake Macquarie City Council voted to keep the "Carey Bay" spelling for the suburb.
