George Carey Foster (born October 1835 – died 9 February 1919) was an important British scientist. He worked as both a chemist and a physicist. He is best known for improving tools that measure electricity very accurately.
One of his most famous inventions is the Carey Foster bridge. This device helps scientists make precise electrical measurements. It is a special version of the Wheatstone bridge, which is another tool used for the same purpose.

George Carey Foster was born in a place called Sabden in Lancashire, England. He went to private schools when he was young. Later, he studied chemistry at University College London.
His Work at University College London
After finishing his studies, George Carey Foster became a Professor of Physics. He taught at University College London from 1865 to 1898. This means he taught physics for over 30 years!
Later, from 1900 to 1904, he became the first "Principal" of the college. A Principal is like the main leader or head of a college. He was in charge of running the whole institution.
Important Discoveries and Research
In the 1860s, George Carey Foster worked with another scientist named Augustus Matthiessen. Together, they wrote important papers about the chemical makeup of certain natural compounds.
He also helped teach others about science. In 1876, he gave special lessons to science teachers. These lessons were all about how to measure electricity correctly.
Leadership and Family Life
George Carey Foster was a respected leader in the science community. He was the president of the Physical Society of London for two years, starting in 1887. This society is a group for physicists.
He also received special honors from universities. For example, he got honorary degrees from the University of Glasgow and the University of Manchester.
In 1868, he married Mary Anne Frances Muir. They had four sons and four daughters. Mary Anne passed away in 1917, and George Carey Foster died about 18 months later in 1919. All of their children were still alive when he passed away.
