Exploring Carinda's Past

How Carinda Was Settled

In the early 1800s, explorers like John Oxley and Charles Sturt ventured into this part of Australia. They were trying to map the rivers and understand the land. They discovered that the inland rivers all flowed into the Darling River.

After these explorations, settlers began to arrive in the Carinda area in the mid-1800s. They built their homes and farms along the waterways.

The Growth of Carinda Station

A man named Thomas McNamara bought a large piece of land, about 16,000 acres, which became known as Carinda Station. He built a house near Marthaguy Creek. This spot soon grew into a small village with a hotel and a store.

The name Carinda might have come from an earlier land area called 'Currundy'. In 1908, a special water well, called a bore, was dug. This allowed people to live further away from the creek. A new part of the town, called the "Top End," grew where Carinda is today.
