Who Was Carl Stokes?

This important building is named after Carl Stokes. He was the 51st mayor of Cleveland. What makes him special is that he was the first African American mayor of a major city in the United States. This was a very important step in history!

Building the Courthouse

What Happens Inside?

The Carl B. Stokes Federal Court House Building is a place where important legal work happens. It houses several parts of the U.S. government. These include:

  • Different types of federal judges who hear cases.
  • Offices for the Clerk of Court, who manages court records.
  • The U.S. Probation and Pretrial Services Office, which helps supervise people involved in the legal system.
  • The offices of the United States Attorney, who represents the U.S. government in court.
  • The U.S. Marshal's Office, which helps keep the courts safe.
  • A special office for the U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division, which works to make sure businesses compete fairly.
  • The United States Immigration Court, which handles immigration cases.

Art at the Courthouse

Outside the building, you can see a large and interesting piece of art. It's a bronze sculpture called Cleveland Venus. This statue was created by an artist from Ohio named Jim Dine. It is 37-foot (11 m) tall and weighs 11.5 tons. The sculpture is a modern take on the famous Venus de Milo statue, but it doesn't have a head or arms.
