Carl Clark was born as Carlton L. Clark in Boston, Massachusetts in 1933. He spent a big part of his life working in Baltimore, Maryland. In Baltimore, he took many pictures that captured scenes of African American life.
Before becoming a famous photographer, Carl Clark served in the United States Army. He served in the military during times of conflict in Korea and Vietnam. After his military service, he went to college. He earned a bachelor's degree in Sociology from the University of Nebraska. Later, he earned another bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from the Maryland Institute College of Art. This education helped him develop his unique artistic vision.
