Carl Kahler (born September 12, 1856 – died April 18, 1906) was an Austrian painter. He was famous for his paintings of everyday life and especially for his amazing pictures of cats.

About Carl Kahler's Life

Carl Kahler was born in a city called Linz, in Austria. When he was 18, he started studying art at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich. His teachers were Ludwig von Löfftz and Wilhelm Lindenschmit the Younger. After finishing his studies, he spent some time learning more about art in Paris, France. Later, he settled in Munich, Germany.

Between 1881 and 1888, Carl Kahler showed his paintings in big cities like Berlin, Munich, and Vienna. In 1885, he moved far away to Australia. He lived and worked in Melbourne until 1890. While there, he painted three pictures about the famous horse race, the Melbourne Cup. One of his paintings, The Betting Ring, was very special because it showed a portrait of every single person in the crowd!

Later, Carl Kahler moved to the United States. In 1891, a woman named Kate Birdsall Johnson asked him to paint a very special picture. This painting was called My Wife's Lovers, and it showed 42 cats! This painting became incredibly popular as a printed picture. After this, Carl Kahler became even more well-known for his beautiful cat paintings.

Carl Kahler sadly passed away at the age of 49 during the big 1906 San Francisco earthquake.
