He was very good at drawing detailed plans for many of Tecton's well-known buildings.

Carl Franck's Early Life and Training

Carl Ludwig Franck was born in Berlin, Germany. His father, Philipp Franck, was a painter. Carl first studied jurisprudence (law) in German cities like Würzburg and Freiburg. This was from 1922 to 1926.

He then decided to study architecture. He learned from a famous architect and artist named Hans Poelzig. Carl studied at the Technical University of Berlin from 1926 to 1930. After that, he worked as an assistant at an architectural firm until 1932. He even got a scholarship to study in Rome for a year. In 1936, he opened his own architecture business.

Moving to England and World War II

In September 1937, Carl moved to England. He was worried about his wife, who was Jewish, and their family in Germany. At that time, Hitler's Germany was not safe for Jewish people.

During World War II, Carl was held for six months. This was because he was from Germany, which was an "enemy" country. He was kept in Hutchinson Internment Camp on the Isle of Man. He even shared a room with another artist, Fred Uhlman, there. Later, he helped Ove Arup with important engineering projects. These projects included Air Raid Precautions (ARP), which helped protect people during air attacks.

Designing Buildings After the War

After the Tecton group broke up in 1948, Carl continued his work. He designed many important buildings on his own. One of his notable projects was the Finsbury Estate in Islington, London. This project also included the Finsbury Library.

Carl also wrote books about architecture. He wrote The villas of Frascati, 1550-1750. This book was published in London in 1966. It was an updated English version of an earlier book he wrote in German.
