Carl Remigius Fresenius was a famous German chemist. He was born on December 28, 1818, and passed away on June 11, 1897. He is best known for his important work in a field called analytical chemistry.

A Chemist's Life

Carl Remigius Fresenius was born in Frankfurt, Germany, on December 28, 1818. Before going to college, he worked for a while at a pharmacy in his hometown.

In 1840, he started studying at Bonn University. A year later, he moved to Gießen. There, he worked as an assistant in the laboratory of a very famous chemist, Justus von Liebig. By 1843, Fresenius had become an assistant professor himself.

Leading a New Lab

In 1845, Fresenius became a professor at the Wiesbaden Agricultural Institution. He taught chemistry, physics, and technology. Just three years later, he became the first director of a new chemical laboratory. He convinced the government of Nassau to create this lab in Wiesbaden.

Under his leadership, this laboratory grew a lot and became very popular. In 1862, a school for pharmacy was added, though it closed in 1877. An agricultural research lab was also added in 1868.

Important Chemistry Books

Besides managing the lab, Fresenius spent most of his time on analytical chemistry. This part of chemistry focuses on figuring out what substances are made of and how much of each part is present.

He wrote very detailed and accurate textbooks on this subject. His book on qualitative analysis (identifying what's there) first came out in 1841. His book on quantitative analysis (measuring how much is there) followed in 1846. These books quickly became standard guides for chemists everywhere.

A Special Journal

Many of Fresenius's own research papers were published in a journal he started. This journal was called Zeitschrift für analytische Chemie. He founded it in 1862 and continued to edit it until he passed away.

This journal was the world's first analytical chemistry journal. It produced 371 volumes! Almost all of them were edited or co-edited by a member of the Fresenius family. The journal lasted for three centuries, from 1862 to 2001. After that, it changed its name to Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry, which is still published today.

Family and Legacy

In 1881, Fresenius passed the directorship of the agricultural research station to his son, Remigius Heinrich Fresenius (1847–1920). His son had also studied chemistry under another famous chemist, H. Kolbe.

Another son, Theodor Wilhelm Fresenius (1856–1936), also became a chemist. He worked in different roles at the Wiesbaden laboratory.

Carl Remigius Fresenius died suddenly in Wiesbaden on June 11, 1897, when he was 78 years old.

His Works

Fresenius wrote many important books that helped chemists learn about analytical chemistry. Here are some of his well-known works:

  • New Methods for Testing Potash and Soda, Ashes, Acids, especially Vinegar, and Manganese Dioxide for their True Content and Commercial Value: This book was for chemists, pharmacists, technicians, and merchants. It was based on his own experiments and published in 1843. Digital edition
  • Guide to Qualitative Chemical Analysis: This book taught about operations, reagents (chemicals used in tests), and how known substances react to reagents. It was for beginners and experienced chemists. The 9th edition came out in 1856. Digital edition
  • Guide to Quantitative Chemical Analysis: This book focused on how to measure the weight and separate different substances. It covered substances found in pharmacy, arts, trades, and agriculture. The 5th edition was published in 1870. Digital edition
